Yes. You will need barcodes if you are selling to a retail or online store.

One for each album title. If you change anything about your album, it becomes a different album and needs a different barcode.

How many barcodes will I need if I want to sell both my complete album and my individual songs?

That depends on the retailer you are selling through. Some allow you to use the barcode number from the complete album. Some may require you have to have a barcode for each individual song. You would need to find out what the retailer’s requirements are before purchasing the barcodes. If they want you to have one barcode per song, and you have 10 songs on your album, then you would need 10 barcodes plus 1 for the complete album.

Barcodes for Greeting Cards

Do I need a barcode to sell my greeting cards?

Yes, you must have a barcode to sell cards. This is how the information about your product will be found in the stores` database when the barcode is scanned.

How many barcodes will I need for my cards?

That depends on how many styles that you have. For example, if you have a birthday card with balloons on the front and another birthday card with a kitten on the front then that means you would need two different barcodes. If you have a birthday card with balloons on the front and the inside says happy birthday and you have another birthday card with balloons on the front and the inside says wishing you a happy birthday then you would need two different barcodes. Remember, the moment you change one thing about your card, it becomes a different product and needs its own barcode number.

How does my barcode get on my greeting card?

You can provide the EPS format of the barcode number to your graphic designer and they can put it directly on the card for you. If you are designing and printing the card yourself, you can put it directly on the card with either the EPS or JPEG format of the barcode graphic. You also have the option of putting a label on the card with your barcode on it.

Do I need to give you any information about my cards?

No, that is not necessary. You will provide that information to the stores where your cards will be sold.

Can someone tell where my product was made based on my barcode number?

No. The only thing you can tell is that the barcode number originated in the United States. Remember barcode is universal, you can use your barcode anywhere in the world.

How many barcode numbers do I need to buy?

Different products = different variations

That means if you change the color, size, scent, shape, quantity, design, style, etc., then each one of those changes makes it into a different product and will need to have its own barcode number.

Example:

If you sell t-shirts in 5 different sizes and in 5 different colors then you need 25 different barcode numbers. (5 sizes x 5 colors = 25 barcodes)

If you have 100 of each size in all 5 colors you still only need 25 barcodes because you are always on going to use the same barcode number on all of the items that are identical. It does not matter if you have 1 or 10 or 10 million of a product. As long as it is the exact same (no variations) then you are going to always use the same barcode number on that product. But, as soon as you change something, it becomes a different product and needs to have a different barcode number.

How do I get my company name and product information into the barcode?

There is no information hidden within a barcode. The lines are a font that a barcode scanner reads to tell it what the numbers are that are shown below in the human readable format.

Every retailer, whether online or in a physical store, will have a check-in process. They will tell you what information (company name, product name, product description, barcode number, etc.) they want from you and they will tell you how they want you to submit that information to them. Once they have that information, they will input it into their point of sale database. Each different retailer has to do this. That is what allows you to go to various stores and buy the exact same product with the exact same barcode number, but have it be sold for different prices.

I have discontinued the product that my barcode number was on. Can I assign the barcode to a different item?

No, it is not recommended to do that because there are some retailers that will keep an item listed in their database forever and it would cause conflicting information.
